I would like to share some news with you.
Since 2001, the District has been affected by the No Child Left Behind law, which has identified schools that have not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as established by the federal government. Schools that were affected by consequences of No Child Left Behind received federal Title I funding. The Georgia Department of Education (DOE) applied for a waiver to provide flexibility from federal No Child Left Behind regulations. In February 2012, the state of Georgia was notified that its waiver had been approved.
In the past, under No Child Left Behind, schools were identified as making AYP or Needs Improvement. Under the waiver, the state of Georgia will identify schools as Reward, Alert, Focus, and Priority. As of Friday, March 9, under the new waiver, the state identified the following schools within our district as Priority schools:
- Burghard Elementary School
- Hartley Elementary School
- King-Danforth Elementary School
- Central High School
- Hutchings Career Center
- Ingram-Pye Elementary School
- Northeast High School
- Rutland High School
- Southwest High School
- Westside High School
Through criteria established by the state, these schools have been identified as schools with the greatest need. The state DOE has indicated that Priority schools will be provided with three years of support and interventions from the state.
Between now and September, the Georgia DOE will be identifying schools that fall within the Reward, Alert, and Focus levels. The Georgia DOE also will be providing detailed information concerning the specifications of the waiver to Districts in the coming months. As information is provided to us from the state, we will pass it along to you.
Dr. Dallemand:
ReplyDeleteAs Vice-Chair of NewTown Macon I have sat through hundreds of presentations and your presentation yesterday was far and away the most spellbinding I have ever seen. The statistics of the current situation are shocking, and as a resident and active citizen I can tell you the information you brought forward is NOT getting out to the public at large. Would you consider making this exact same speech again so that it could be filmed and posted on YouTube? The people of Macon need to see this and in today's world YouTube allows more direct access to both the audience and the source. (ex - Syria)
Many thanks for your presentation and I look forward to assisting any way I can.

Dr. Dallemand, I would like to thank you for your vision, "The Macon Miracle". I am a parent and I support the plan 100%. However, as a parent, I am very concerned about the recent issues concerning weapons and violence in our Middle and High Schools. These issues are not new to our school system but the issues of weapons and violence seem to be getting worse. Several parents feel we need metal detectors installed in our schools and school buses. I realize that measures to this extreme may not be possible. However, I feel we need to react and do something quickly. One quick solution is to implement a clear/mesh book bag policy only. This will not completely solve the problem, but it is a start. This should be implemented in all the middle and high schools. Also, pocket books should be banned as well. This needs to be enforced just like the dress code. Something has to be done and done soon. I have a child that will be entering middle school in the fall and I am terrified. Please implement something soon. We are currently in dire straits. Thank you for your time.
ReplyDeleteDr. Dallemand, I am a supporter of the Macon Miracle Plan. Our school system has been in need of a miracle for a long time now. I was deeply disappointed regarding the decision to make the extended school days optional. I understand that you were just trying to come to a happy medium with the opposition, but I wish you would have stayed firm on this. I do have a suggestion.Since the list of priority schools has been released, I feel that the extended hours should be mandatory in these schools. Hopefully it will not create any transportation issues. I also think that the mandatory extended hours for all schools should be addressed again for the 2013-2014 school year.
ReplyDeleteI hope the state recognizes how YOU fail to fight for the black schools of greatest need. I will continue to address the issue of poor textooks and lack of playground equipment in these inner-city schools. These black students deserve the same as the students in North Macon. It's funnny how opposing comments are never shared. This my second post with no response. I'm sure news crews will get a response.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your support. It is very much appreciated.
